The Role

The Design Technician supports projects and technical sales by producing clear, accurate flat roof design information.

The role works closely with Technical Sales Managers, Technical Roof Surveyors and other technical teams throughout a project. Design Technicians help make sure design information is consistent, buildable and suitable to issue. The focus is on producing design work that directly supports projects, customers and commercial outcomes.

Job Purpose

The Design Technician helps projects run smoothly by:

  • producing clear, accurate drawings at the right time
  • keeping design information up to date
  • supporting Technical Sales Managers with defined parts of the design process
  • helping reduce errors, delays and rework

All work supports project delivery, customer requirements or commercial outcomes.

About the Team

The Design Team works alongside Technical Sales, Administration and Compliance teams.

Most work is managed through Salesforce, AutoCAD and related systems. Priorities are set based on project stage, deadlines and agreed objectives. The team plays an important role in producing clear, consistent design information, supporting customers and helping projects move forward.

The Role

Detail Drawing

You will:

  • Produce clear, accurate flat roof drawings.
  • Maintain and update Axter’s standard detail library.
  • Produce project-specific details based on project requirements.
  • Ensure drawings reflect Axter systems, build-ups and interfaces.
  • Maintain consistent drawing standards, naming and version control.

Design Calculations

You will:

  • Complete U-value calculations.
  • Carry out or coordinate design calculations such as rainwater (flow-rate) and wind load.
  • Use approved tools and methods to produce calculation outputs.
  • Support the coordination of calculations with third parties where required.

Specialist Areas

All Design Technicians are expected to have a working understanding of key areas. Design Technicians may also be assigned responsibility for a specific area. This may include leading work, developing knowledge and supporting the wider team.

Refurbishment may include:

  • Interpreting 3D scans and working with point cloud data to support roof plans.
  • Assessing existing roof geometry, falls and constraints.
  • Producing drawings that reflect site conditions and anomalies.
  • Managing and maintaining refurbishment design information.

Tapered Design may include:

  • Supporting and developing tapered insulation schemes.
  • Producing layouts that achieve drainage and performance requirements.
  • Reviewing designs to improve material use and reduce waste.
  • Supporting design discussions with internal teams and external parties.

BIM and Digital Information may include:

  • Maintaining BIM-related information and object data.
  • Supporting coordination with external systems and information requirements.
  • Assisting with digital handover information and asset data.

Project Support and Collaboration

  • Work with Technical Sales Managers to understand requirements and timescales.
  • Support project delivery by producing drawings and design information.
  • Work with Technical Roof Surveyors to interpret survey data and apply it to designs.
  • Communicate clearly when information is missing or unclear.
  • Log and track design work in Salesforce.

Professional Conduct and Self Development

  • Manage your own workload and meet agreed deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Build your understanding of Axter systems, projects and processes.
  • Take part in team meetings, reviews and improvement work.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Behaviours

Mandatory Qualifications
None formally required.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

  • Experience producing technical drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Attention to detail and a methodical approach to checking information.
  • Able to manage drawings, file structures and version control.
  • Able to interpret survey information, including roof geometry, penetrations and annotations.
  • Able to complete design calculations, including thermal, tapered and related requirements.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft 365 tools for communication and documentation.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in architecture, design, construction, engineering or a related field.
  • Experience producing CAD drawings and bespoke details in a construction or building envelope environment.
  • Understanding of roofing systems, tapered design, thermal performance or drainage.
  • Experience working with point cloud data, 3D scans or BIM workflows.
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar systems.
  • Understanding of project-based work and technical documentation.

Required Behaviours

  • Focus on work that directly supports projects, customers or commercial outcomes.
  • Escalate where design work does not support project requirements, technical standards or commercial outcomes.
  • Care about accuracy, completeness and consistency of drawings and calculations. Challenge missing, unclear or poor-quality inputs rather than working around them.
  • Check work before issue. Take responsibility for the quality of drawings and calculations rather than relying on others to find errors.
  • Raise issues early where design inputs, requirements or constraints are unclear. Do not make assumptions that could lead to incorrect design outputs.
  • Work in a consistent way so design outputs are reliable and not dependent on individual approaches.
  • Communicate clearly with Technical Sales Managers, Technical Roof Surveyors and colleagues to keep design work moving and avoid delays.
  • Prioritise work based on agreed objectives and deadlines. Speak up when capacity is stretched rather than letting quality drop.
  • Use drawing standards, calculation tools and systems properly. Do not create workarounds that cause confusion, rework or loss of clarity.
  • Suggest practical changes that improve drawings, templates and workflows, and be willing to adopt better ways of working when agreed.
  • Act with respect, integrity and professionalism when dealing with customers and colleagues, even under pressure.
