Axter hosts first Carbon Literacy training for installers

Axter has held its first Carbon Literacy course for installers this week, helping operatives understand how their choices and actions can make a real difference on site.

We worked closely with The Carbon Literacy Project and consultants Hattrick | B Corp™ certified to develop a training programme tailored specifically for roofing operatives.

"This training is more than just another course – it’s a crucial step toward a more sustainable future. We only have one planet, and every step towards sustainability counts."

- Hattrick, Carbon Literacy consultants

As a B Corp™ certified and Gold Carbon Literate Organisation, and with our staff all fully trained, we want to offer operatives in our installer network the opportunity to develop practical skills to work more sustainably. We’re always looking for better, more sustainable ways to waterproof, creating flat roofs that help both the environment and the communities around us.

Our training gives roofing operatives the knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Reduce environmental impact on site
  • Understand how climate change affects roofing installations
  • Take tangible steps toward lower-carbon operations

At the end of the programme, operatives are asked to make a pledge to take actionable steps, such as reducing site waste, using public transport, or car-sharing to work.

The course was hosted at Eastern Region Roof Training (ERRT), to 8 roofing apprentices. Clive Coote, Chief Executive Officer at ERRT Group said

"Axter's Carbon Literacy training session was excellent, our roofing apprentices were fully engaged and made comments on how much they had learnt from the session, ERRTG would definitely recommend this course"

Supporting operatives in training and beyond

The course has been designed to be multicultural and engaging, ensuring that operatives from diverse backgrounds can fully participate. Recognising that not all operatives have the same level of literacy or language proficiency, the course includes video testimonials, step-by-step visual guides, and simplified pledge options.

Axter is proud to be the first roofing manufacturer to achieve Gold Carbon Literate Organisation status. By equipping our teams and accredited installers with Carbon Literacy skills, we’re helping the industry take practical steps toward a lower-carbon future.
