Meet our Solar PV and Green Roof expert: Luke Rootham

Posted by Jamie Watt —

With a focus on innovation and industry leadership, Axter is committed to helping shape the future of renewable energy and green infrastructure. We spoke to Luke Rootham, Solar PV and Green Roof Product Manager at Axter, about his inspiring career journey, his current role overseeing the integration of solar and green roofing technologies at Axter, and why he’s passionate about being part of a company known for its commitment to doing things the right way.

Luke reveals the challenges, responsibilities, and motivations that drive his work in advancing sustainable technologies and shaping industry standards, and how green roof and solar PV systems are transforming our communities and the planet.

Tell us about your career journey and what drew you to Axter

My journey began when I was working at a recruitment agency and Axter was one of my clients. Initially, I came on board as a Trainee Technical Sales Manager (TSM) and worked my way up to my current role — Solar PV and Green Roof Product Manager — where I now oversee the integration and development of these technologies within Axter. The emerging biosolar technology, which combines both elements, made it logical to bring them together under one division.

What really drew me to Axter was its commitment to doing things the right way. The leadership team has built something truly unique in our industry, and I believe this is reflected in the long tenure of team members, including myself.

What are the key responsibilities and challenges in your current role?

I am responsible for overseeing a wide range of areas across the two product spheres, including technical aspects, supply chain management, marketing, sales, and product development. While I have a strong team supporting me, I take ownership of these key functions to ensure everything aligns with our strategic goals and our customers receive the best possible product and service.

One of the main challenges in my role is managing the diversity of the responsibilities. Although solar and green roofing technologies are symbiotic, they are governed by different regulations, standards, and even terminologies. This means I often must switch gears quickly—from focusing on roofing and biodiversity to diving into the specifics of electrical systems.

Tell us more about your drive to lead the industry forward

I’m actively involved in several working groups and committees that focus on different aspects of sustainable technologies and their standards, including Solar Energy UK’s Standards and Certification Committee; six groups within the Green Roof Organisation, covering topics such as Biodiversity Net Gain, biosolar, fire guidance; plus, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme’s Solar Mounting Working Group.

It’s crucial for us as a team to stay informed about industry developments while also actively shaping them. By participating in these groups, I ensure that we are not just following trends but contributing to the creation of standards and best practices.

I have a strong passion for problem-solving and finding practical solutions. Working in these committees allows me to address current challenges, such as those related to fire safety in solar installations or integrating green roofs with solar PV systems. My approach is to tackle issues directly and efficiently, rather than waiting for slow-moving industry processes to catch up.

One of my key motivations is to help develop standards that are not only technically sound but also clear and accessible. Inspired by leaders like Phillip Wilcox-Moore, the Managing Director of Axter, who emphasises making complex information understandable, I aim to contribute to creating guidance that is straightforward and practical. This ensures that the standards we set are useful for all stakeholders, not just experts.

The collaborative spirit of working together helps us create more effective solutions and guide the industry in the right direction.

Can you explain how Axter's solar PV products differ from those of competitors?

The real differentiator lies in our full turnkey design solution. This includes everything from design and installation to ensuring the system meets all necessary standards and regulations.

We also work with established solar PV installers, vetting them with the same rigorous standards we apply to our Axtershield installers. This ensures a consistently high level of service, design, and integration across the board. Our approach mirrors the successful model we've used in roofing, but adapted to factor in the electrical expertise needed.

Solar PV Flex, our thin-film flexible membrane module, is exclusive to Axter. We also provide biosolar solutions, where we handle all aspects, including weight, wind, and yield calculations, under our responsibility.

What inspires you most about working in the fields of renewable energy, green infrastructure, and flat roofing?

What inspires me most is the opportunity for innovation and transformation. There’s immense untapped potential in unused spaces like rooftops, which motivates me to explore new ideas and technologies. Our fields are dynamic, offering endless possibilities for creative problem-solving without the constraints of traditional methods. This freedom to innovate and pioneer new solutions is exciting. The chance to contribute to meaningful change in resource use and sustainability drives me, as we’re shaping a more resilient and sustainable future.

What advice would you give to young professionals looking to enter the flat roofing industry?

My advice is to broaden your perspective and explore diverse opportunities in flat roofing. It’s not just about being a tradesperson; roles range from design and technical positions to management and innovation. Do not limit yourself to traditional roles—consider the full spectrum of opportunities.

While formal qualifications can help, passion, curiosity, and a strong aptitude are more crucial to succeed in many roles in this industry. My own success demonstrates this. Stay curious and ambitious, research the industry, and proactively seek opportunities while thinking outside the box.
