Interview with Ian Thompson on the Launch of Carbon Literacy training for operatives

Posted by Maddie Tribley —

The construction industry has a vital role to play in addressing climate change, and Axter is stepping up to the challenge. As a certified B Corp and a Gold Carbon Literate Organisation, we are committed to driving meaningful change – transforming the way roofing systems contribute to a more sustainable future.

Our latest initiative, Carbon Literacy training for Axter accredited installers, is a key part of our broader mission to reduce environmental impact and ensure climate resilience is embedded into our operations. It equips roofing operatives with a strong foundation in sustainability, helping them to understand the effects of climate change on roofing installations and educating them on practical solutions to minimise their carbon footprints.

This training is more than just another course – it’s a crucial step toward a more sustainable future. We only have one planet, and every step towards sustainability counts"

What is Carbon Literacy Training for operatives?

Carbon Literacy is an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis. Axter’s Carbon Literacy training offers a unique blend of core sustainability education and industry-specific content.

We’ve been working closely with the Carbon Literacy Project and consultants Hattrick to develop a training programme specifically tailored for roofing operatives. As far as we know, this is the first of its kind in the industry to be delivered by a manufacturer,” explains Ian.

Axter works hand in hand with a qualified and professional network of roofing contractors, who are focused on continual improvement and fully committed to the delivery of Axter flat roof waterproofing systems without fault or defect. Learn more about Axter’s accredited installer network and the training opportunities provided alongside Carbon Literacy training.

What makes this training different from standard Carbon Literacy courses?

“This course has been designed with operatives in mind,” says Ian. “While it covers core Carbon Literacy principles, it also includes industry-specific content. We discuss the impact of changing weather patterns on construction schedules, how site conditions are affected by climate, and practical steps operatives can take to reduce their carbon footprint, such as travel choices and material waste reduction.”

The training emphasises sustainability in daily tasks, ensuring that operatives are equipped to handle site-specific challenges while minimising their environmental impact.

At the end of the programme, operatives are asked to make a pledge to take actionable steps, such as reducing site waste, using public transport, or car-sharing to work. This tangible commitment is designed to ensure lasting impact.

Inclusivity and accessibility: Making the training open to all

Inclusivity and accessibility are central to the training programme. Ian shares, “We have designed the course to be multicultural and engaging, ensuring that operatives from diverse backgrounds can fully participate. Recognising that not all operatives have the same level of literacy or language proficiency, we’ve included video testimonials, step-by-step visual guides, and simplified pledge options.”

This course has been adapted incredibly well to suit the needs of those engaging in the roofing course, I am really excited to see the outcome of these training sessions, along with your upcoming CLO accreditation.

During my time at the Carbon Literacy project, I have not heard or seen a course designed in being this interactive and inspires a new direction in which Carbon Literacy can be accessed. Kudos to your initiative in capturing the learners' focus in an interactive workshop!”

What motivated Axter to develop this training?

Ian explains that Axter’s commitment to sustainability was a driving force behind the development of the training. “The data speaks for itself – since the Industrial Revolution, human activity has had a huge impact on the climate. This training helps operatives see the part they can play, both in their work and in their daily lives. As a company, we are committed to sustainability, and this is one step towards making meaningful changes.”

This initiative aligns with Axter’s broader sustainability strategy, especially following the company’s recent B Corp certification. Learn more about Axter’s journey to a sustainable future.

Will other companies follow Axter’s lead?

Ian is hopeful that others in the industry will follow suit. “I certainly hope so. We’re proud to be leading the way in this space, and we want to encourage others to do the same. The more people in our industry who are educated on carbon literacy, the better for the environment and for future generations.”

Supporting operatives beyond the training

Axter offers ongoing support to operatives who complete the training. Ian elaborates, “Ongoing support will be available through our trainers and the Carbon Literacy Project. Operatives can reach out to us for guidance or clarification at any time; they also have the option to refresh their training after 12 months. We’re also looking at ways to track the effectiveness of the training and see how it influences behaviour in the long term.”

Quality Assurance: Ensuring excellence every step of the way

As part of Axter’s commitment to delivering high-quality roofing solutions, the Quality Assurance Team ensure installations meet the highest standards; clients also benefit from access to highly vetted professionals through the accredited installer network. “Carbon Literacy training forms part of a more extensive approach to ensuring that we deliver excellence in every aspect of our work,” Ian states.
