Crown Place, at 75-79 Lancaster Street, is an £85 million development that stands as Birmingham's tallest purpose-built student accommodation scheme, reaching 33 storeys. Delivered under main contractor Winvic Construction, the development provides 814 bed spaces across 572 independent studios, 114 cluster flats and 128 duplex rooms.
The building follows a tiered design, with a central 33-storey tower anchored by nine-storey and 12-storey “shoulder” blocks. It sits on the edge of the Lancaster Circus flyover, within walking distance of Aston University and Birmingham City University, and connected to the University of Birmingham by city transit links.
Axter was involved with the project from Stage 3 through to completion, working alongside ECE Westworks, Winvic and Advanced Roofing to deliver the waterproofing, blue roof and green roof systems across the development.
A blue roof requirement across multiple roof areas was needed to achieve specific site run-off targets. Axter was appointed early, during Stage 3, to work with the civil engineers on the blue roof requirements.
The city centre location meant deliveries to site had to be timed and booked in advance throughout the programme.
Axter ensured the production of a full design pack including blue roof calculations to determine flow rates. The green roof system was also designed and supplied by Axter, using a wildflower seeded system.
Level 1 used a Force Dalle warm roof system with blue roof and green roof finishes. Levels 9 and 12 each used a Force Dalle warm roof system with a blue roof. The main roof at Level 33 used the Wilotekt-Plus hot melt system with Hytherm ECO XPS insulation.
All roof areas were designed to zero falls in accordance with BS 6229:2018.
Axter worked with ECE Westworks at Stage 3 and Stage 4 to complete the design requirements, then worked directly with the Winvic design team and Advanced Roofing once on site. A Platinum-level guarantee was provided on completion.
