Sustainability milestones: progress, people and the road ahead
Sustainability has become an increasingly visible part of life at Axter – not just in the targets we’re setting or the recognition we’ve received, but in the everyday actions, choices and conversations happening across the business.
This progress has been driven by our people, including members of our sustainability committee, who are seeing these changes first-hand in how we work, reduce energy use, recycle and think differently about our impact.
In this article, we share the experiences of team members across Axter, alongside key sustainability milestones achieved over the past year, as we continue our journey towards a more sustainable future.
Maddie Tribley, Marketing Executive
“Over the last year, sustainability has become more visible in my day-to-day work,” says Maddie. “Being part of the sustainability committee has allowed me to see the genuine drive behind these changes and how committed people are across the business.”
Practical improvements have supported this shift:
- Recycling processes have been updated, making it easier for team members to make more sustainable choices as part of their daily routines.
- Colleagues are more conscious of energy use, encouraging habits such as fully shutting down devices and using monitors efficiently to help conserve energy.
Industry engagement has also played an important role in shaping Maddie’s experience. Axter won the Sustainability Strategy Award at the East Anglia Clean & Green Awards 2025:
“Attending the awards within my first couple of months of working at Axter was a defining moment for me. It felt like a real privilege to see, first-hand, the tangible sustainability impact Axter is already making across East Anglia.
“Seeing the level of interest and engagement from other organisations in what Axter is doing, and how we are driving meaningful change, was genuinely inspiring and reinforced my pride in being part of the business.”
Maddie adds that Axter’s sustainability values have influenced her life outside work:
“They have made me more conscious of the impact of everyday decisions. Through Carbon Literacy training and being involved in sustainability initiatives at Axter, I’ve become more aware of carbon impact and how small changes can collectively make a difference.”
Attending the Carbon Literacy Awards in Manchester, where Axter became the first roofing manufacturer to achieve Gold status, was another proud moment.
“Being there with colleagues allowed me to learn from other businesses, share ideas, and take part in impactful conversations about sustainability initiatives beyond Axter,” adds Maddie.
In July 2024, Axter achieved B Corporation status:
“Working for a B Corp gives me a strong sense of pride in not just what we do at Axter, but how we do it, knowing our decisions are guided by a commitment to people, the environment, and long-term impact.
“On a personal level, being part of the B Corp initiative has encouraged me to think differently about the impact I have and the changes I can help make, both individually and as part of the wider business.
“It has also given me the confidence and knowledge to educate others through everyday conversations about carbon impact and the changes needed to protect the environment we all live in,” says Maddie.
Hollie Argent, Technical Administrator
In Hollie’s role as a Technical Administrator, sustainability often shows up through digital habits and day-to-day ways of working.
“I’ve become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of digital activity and how everyday practices can contribute to carbon emissions,” Hollie explains.
“With this increased understanding, I make a conscious effort to reduce my digital footprint wherever possible. For example, when sending large volumes of documents to clients or architects, I now use file-sharing links rather than multiple email attachments, which is a more sustainable option.”
A proud moment for Hollie came during her designated charity day, when she took part in a local litter pick.
“I took my charity day in December, when we spent the day litter picking around the local community. It was a rewarding experience and genuinely made me feel like I was making a positive contribution by helping prevent unwanted rubbish from ending up in landfill or the oceans, where it can cause significant environmental harm. Throughout the day, I felt a strong sense of pride and happiness knowing that my workplace supports and enables us to give something meaningful back to the environment.”
“Axter actively encourages employees to take their allocated charity day, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute to improving the environment,” adds Hollie.
Working for a B Corp has also shaped how Hollie views Axter:
“This means being part of an organisation that genuinely considers its impact beyond profit. It shows a commitment to balancing commercial success with responsibility to the environment, employees, customers, and the wider society. For me, it provides reassurance that the values the company promotes are reflected in real actions and decision-making, not just words.”
These values have influenced Hollie’s life outside work as well:
“Since working at Axter, I’ve become much more conscious of how my everyday actions impact sustainability. I now walk to work each day instead of using public transport, helping to reduce my environmental footprint. I’ve also become more mindful of my food choices, making a conscious effort to eat less meat and avoid foods that require high levels of emissions to produce.”
“These changes have also influenced the people around me,” adds Hollie. “Through conversations with family and friends, I’ve been able to share what I’ve learned about sustainability and encourage them to make more environmentally conscious choices.”
Sustainability achievements
Over the past year, as a company, we’ve made significant progress toward becoming a Net Zero organisation by 2040.
We have also launched Carbon Literacy training for accredited installers, helping roofing operatives understand the effects of climate change on installations and educating them on practical solutions to minimise their carbon footprints.
Other milestones include joining the Rebuilding Nature Alliance 2025 and achieving ISO14001 and ISO9001 certification, further embedding sustainability into all aspects of our operations.
Boxed out quote: “I am immensely proud of the progress we have made towards our planet and communities. We have achieved this through our vision to improve the roofscape and transform the world above our heads. Looking ahead, we will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, seek out more sustainable and innovative ways to waterproof better, and pioneer flat roofs that benefit the generations to come.”
