Project Overview

The function room adjacent to the King’s Head pub in Little Marlow had fallen into a state of disrepair, with the roof's condition deteriorating to the point where the timber roof deck was rotten, and water ingress was causing widespread issues; the roof was in urgent need of renewal.

Axter collaborated with Henleys Roofing and Newline Property Contractors to carry out the refurbishment, transforming an aged and deteriorating roof into a modern, waterproof, aesthetically pleasing structure.

The project serves as a strong example of how Axter's Ecoflex single ply roofing system can breathe new life into aging buildings while ensuring long-term durability and cost efficiency.

Key Challenges

One of the primary challenges of this project was the timing. The refurbishment had to be completed during the summer months to avoid the onset of heavy autumn rains, which could have added delays, complexity and cost to the project. The quick turnaround was vital, particularly as the pub had to remain closed during the works.

Another challenge was the condition of the existing roof. The timber decking needed to be replaced entirely, adding to the scope of the work. In addition, working on a pitched roof required a specialist installer with the right skill set to deliver a high-quality finish.

Axter's Ecoflex solution

Axter’s Ecoflex single ply membrane was selected as the ideal solution for this refurbishment. Ecoflex is a PVC synthetic membrane that is lightweight, quick to install, and has flame-free application.

The Ecoflex system has aesthetic advantages. By incorporating standing seam profiles, the system can replicate the appearance of a metal roof, delivering a modern and stylish look.

Benefits and outcomes

Speed of installation: Thanks to the flame-free and mechanically fixed application, the installation was completed swiftly in just three weeks, from mid-August to early September, allowing the pub to reopen promptly and minimise loss of revenue.

Aesthetic transformation: The King’s Head underwent a dramatic visual upgrade, with the dark grey Ecoflex membrane replaced the previous aged and weathered timber, providing a sleek, contemporary finish, while still being sympathetic to the more historic neighbouring pub buildings.

Durability and performance: The Ecoflex system comes with a 20-year guarantee and a life expectancy of up to 30 years, ensuring that the building will be protected from the elements for many years to come.

Cost-effectiveness: The single ply membrane offered a cost-efficient alternative to many other roofing solutions. Its lightweight nature and single-layer application helped keep the budget in check.
